GIGABYTE Aircruiser N300 GN-WS30N 802.11N b/g/n draft 2.0 review

By mobilenvidia • November 18, 2008 (2008-11-18) at 08:24:06 GMT

Been given an opportunity by Oxfordtec to give this WLAN card for a spin.
As some may know my other passion besides NVIDIA driver modding is WLAN tweaking.
So here are my thoughts on this device.

A parcel arrived in the mail, and within it was a thin plastic coated sleeve, once opened it contained a WLAN card and a CD.
Gigabyte is quite good regarding this, they pack all their WLAN cards like this.
Other manufactures often ship as OEM products, meaning no Packaging or Software.

I took the WLAN/Modem panel of the back of my Notebook.
Took out the SparkLAN WPEA-124N that I was currently using.
Plugged 3 antenna's in to the 3 sockets.
Now normally the Dell Inspiron has only 2 aerial cables but I got a set from Oxfordtec to play with.
So I used 2 x Oxfordtec Antennas and one (white) from the i9400, as I ran out of room to put them smile.gif
If you only have 2 aerial cables no need to worry it will just use 2T/2R mode (instead of 2T/3R), but some range will be lost.
Once the card was in, I cranked up the Notebook and inserted the CD.
First minor glitch Gigabyte CD still doesn't' support x64 OS sad.gif
So after doing a manual driver install of the CD I discovered the drivers were rather ancient, quick driver update via control panel got me a driver from Feb 2008.
Off to Ralink website I went and here were much newer drivers there (Sept '08), and a huge bonus as well, a fully working Client Utility that works in Vista AND with x64 smile.gif

So armed with the latest driver and a client utility I could then do some tests to see how this baby behaved.

WLAN card:
GIGABYTE Aircruiser N300 GN-WS30N
Chipet Ralink RT2800E - BB/MAC RT2890 - Radio RT2820
Freq Band 2.4Ghz
Max Speed 300Mbps
2xTransmit/3xReceive Antenna scokets

Wireless Router:
Dlink DIR-655
Chipset Atheros
Freq Band 2.4Ghz
Max Speed 300Mbps
2xTransmit/3xReceive Antennae (2db)

Range tests:
1m Range Signal Strengh, 100%, 100% and 100%, link Quality 100% (no walls)
5m Range Signal Strengh, 100%, 95% and 100%, link Quality 100% (no walls)
8m Range Signal Strengh, 80%, 35% and 50%, link Quality 99% (1 wall)
15m Range Signal Strengh, 60%, 30% and 50%, link Quality 80% (2 walls)
20m Range Signal Strengh, 40%, 25% and 50%, link Quality 80% (3 walls)
40m Range Signal Strengh, 45%, 25% and 45%, link Quality 94% (1 wall)
60m Range Signal Strengh, 45%, 25% and 45%, link Quality 85% (1 wall)
Excellent range, 60m seems to be the max, after this the connection became unstable as the noise level bar shot up.
3 walls and 20m inside seems to also be at it's extreme edge.

Pros:
2T/3R aerial option
Client Utility works in all OS's and versions
Client Utility usability and information, excellent
Excellent range, picks up my neighbours router
Connects to router VERY quickly.
Very good driver and release notes on website.
Official Linux Support
Official MAC Support

Cons:
Only does 11n in G band (there is a RT2800ED version with 5Ghz but not from Gigabyte)
Driver CD only works with x86 OS's
Driver CD has ancient drivers and no way to get the client utility for x64 OS.

Conclusion:
Only real gripe is the included CD with the card, no much support for Vista x64.
Gigabyte really need to support all OS versions with their install CD.
The card costs $49.95, if you don't need A Band then very good value for money as Dual band cards cost around $10 more.
I can highly recommend this card, for both the novice and the pro.
It's easy to setup and use and the pro can play with a heap of settings in the Client Utility.
Range is very good, was able to download a file at 180KB/s at 60m through 1 wall without download accelerators this is normal download speed for me with my ISP.
Non like WLAN Chipset will only give a max link speed of 270Mbps, so the Dlink DIR-655 being Atheros based means that max connection speed will is 270Mbps, the loss of 30Mbs will not be noticed, as I doubt you'll ever get a transfer speed over 150Mbps in real life.
Connection to the router is very fast, takes but a few seconds to hook up, a very good thing when coming out of Standby.
I am very impressed with this card, my next review the SparkLAN WPEA-110N will have a hard job in out doing this good all rounder.

A full speed test comparison will follow to see how a selection of cards perform at various distances.

Sample of Client Utility at work.

Powermizer Switch v1.1

By Dox • November 16, 2008 (2008-11-16) at 23:35:23 GMT

Powermizer Switch has been updated to version 1.1.
Its a small but powerful app which allows you to:

turn off/on powermizer
Allow powermizer on Battery but off on AC.

I'd like to thank "Xsmile" from Notebook reviews for updating powermizer Switch to my my settings smile.gif
I will definitely include these in future versions of Custom Forceware.

INF v3.273a

By mobilenvidia • November 15, 2008 (2008-11-15) at 20:16:13 GMT

Small fix for NVMCTRAY not found fix in this INF update.

Never noticed this as it will happily install a previous version if driver is still installed.
The error will occur if you Uninstall driver first.

Not sure why NVIDIA removed this.
Probably why we have not seen this driver released as official even though it did apparently get WHQL.
Who knows smile.gif

This only affects 180.44 Vista x86/x64

UAC... 'User account control'... Whenever I do a clean install of Vista, I immediately turned this off. It seems that a lot of other users do to, and Microsoft has addressed this issue. In Windows 7 you now have a slider bar that lets you choose your level of protection. (Similar to internet explorer level of protection) There is a level...
"I don’t want to be prompt whenever I change a windows settings, but i do if a 3rd party application wants to".
This is a good addition to W7.

Side bar -It’s gone. W7 still lets you put little gadgets on your desktop, but there is no longer a sidebar stuck there. You can have one or two gadgets on your desktop, and not take up that valuable few extra KB of memory to load a whole side bar.

Performance -Well... it's what we all want to see, unfortunately I have noticed very little. It does boot up faster, but for me this was never an issue. I don't mind a 2 min boot up, but what I would really like to see is performance after the fact. Applications smoother and faster to load, gaming performance also. MS says that...

"We are going through a lot of pains to address this issue. Initialising fewer processes, and running them in parallel"

This means that W7 will initialise fewer 'startup' services and process than previous versions of windows. When starting wireless or network applications, the service was initialised and while this happened the application was also started. In a core2 system or equivalent this is not a problem, but if you dont have this, then it will take longer to start this application than XP/ Vista. (not sure that this is a big issue, as in 2 years most users will have at least a core2 processor)

Memory management - Each window you open in XP or Vista, requires more memory than the previous one. So... W7 has been changed so that each window you open will use the same amount of memory. Nice.

No bundled software - You will need to download them from the web. i.e. windows mail, windows writer (wordpad), moviemaker etc.
Paint does come with W7, and has a little GUI (Graphic User Interface) face lift. Calculator is also there with a face lift.

Over all it does seem MS is trying to address the issues that the public has. Interesting to see what the final release will be able to do.

Says Nvidia and all the analysts

Nvidia told the world that in Q3 2008, around 55 percent of the market was notebooks and this is very exciting for Nvidia as it now has an chipset for Core 2 based notebooks.

Apple was the first to announce that its notebooks, including macBook pro and Air “Jordan” Mac, are using Nvidia’s Geforce 9400M chipset and this is a big growth opportunity for Nvidia. Nvidia also commented that they have great margins out of these chips.

Naturally, this 55 percent is mostly based on Intel, and Atom cheap small netbooks certainly helped in this game and this paints a clear picture of where the industry wants to go.

This chipset is the first ever that they launched for Intel CPUs and Nvidia promised even more in years to come, as long as Intel lets them. Nvidia was clear that it has a DMI license for Core 2 based CPU but so far it failed to get QDI license, something you need for Bloomfield Nehalem chips but this doesn’t affect notebooks at all.

Notebook market will of course continue to grow but don't expect desktops to actually disappear because of that.
